Your LinkedIn profile is almost invisible outside LinkedIn

"It's all on my LinkedIn"

We build humandex, a public professional profile that search engines and AI assistants can read. When we talk to people about it, we hear the same answer again and again: everything about me is already on LinkedIn.

It's true that the information is there. What we wanted to know is who can actually see it. A recruiter who googles your name, or asks ChatGPT about you, never opens LinkedIn. They see whatever LinkedIn lets out onto the open web.

So we ran a simple test. We picked 20 people at random from humandex users who have a LinkedIn profile, and then 12 more from the same shuffled list. For each person we compared two things:

• What Google shows about their LinkedIn profile. We searched for the exact profile address, site:linkedin.com/in/<profile>. That is the friendliest query possible for LinkedIn: if Google has the profile, this finds it.
• What the open web knows about their career. That is their humandex profile, put together from public sources and confirmed by the person: on average 5 roles and 20 sources per person.

Two in five profiles are not in Google at all

For 13 of 32 people, Google returned nothing for their exact LinkedIn address. In one case it showed five other people with a similar name instead. In the first random group, 14 of 20 profiles were found.

Each dot is one person. Searched on google.com, US, English, results not personalized.

When Google does find a profile, it shows one line

Every profile Google found got exactly one search result: a title with a name and a headline or a company, sometimes a city, and the first sentence or two of the "About" section. The median is about 220 characters, and the longest is 285. Work history, past jobs, dates and achievements stay inside LinkedIn.

AI assistants can't open LinkedIn either

More and more candidate research happens in ChatGPT and Perplexity. We gave both assistants each person's LinkedIn link and asked for their work history. Neither could open a single profile. Whatever they said came from other pages, and when those pages didn't exist, the answer stayed close to empty.

Same 20 people from the first random group, asked through the APIs with web search on: "Open this LinkedIn profile and list the person's full work history."

Why this matters now

For years LinkedIn was where recruiters looked, so a good LinkedIn profile was enough. That's changing. Recruiters and hiring managers now ask AI to look people up, and AI sourcing tools that search the open web are growing fast.

AI assistants and AI sourcing tools work from the open web. What LinkedIn keeps behind its login doesn't exist for them.

Your career may be well documented on LinkedIn. But if it lives only there, anyone who looks you up outside LinkedIn sees a name and a headline, and sometimes not even that.

What this test does and doesn't show

• It shows what people outside LinkedIn see: Google users and AI assistants. A logged-in LinkedIn member can still see the whole profile.
• It's a small sample: 32 humandex users, mostly in the US. LinkedIn as a whole may look different.
• We checked profiles, not LinkedIn posts or articles.
• Google results vary by country, language and time. We took one snapshot: google.com, US English, 2026-10-09.

Method: past employers exclude the current company. Each school counts once. Employers and schools were matched automatically by distinctive words in their names. Of the 87 roles on the humandex profiles of people Google found, 60% are confirmed by a source other than LinkedIn.
